Ike Debris Removal ( email to Alan Koelemay, 10/04/08 )

As stated, everyone should put all their debris at the curb in two piles; organic and inorganic.

The debris removal company is not FEMA. They are contracted by the city but in order for the city to be refunded by FEMA all regulations/processes must be met. One FEMA rule is that the debris company may not go onto private property. Therefore, all Ike related debris must be brought to the curb in the city .RO.W. This includes the stumps. Most citizens have gotten their stumps to the curb- those that have not done this yet will need to make those arrangements. I am sorry but the city cannot go on private property to remove any debris.

Hurricane Ike Report (initial review)

Baronridge Park: Mud Lake apparently came up to the base of the Scout Hut, but not inside. No
apparent damage to the building itself, but the A/C units that were on stands at both ends of the
building and not as high up, collapsed to the ground and was looked at September 23rd by
Aircon to see what repairs need to be made. The ductwork is in shambles as well.

Also, one of the light poles at the tennis court collapsed and was inspected on September 24th
by Patriot Court Systems to determine repairs that need to be made as well. The other poles will
be looked at too for integrity.

The pier suffered some damage, but it does not appear to be structural. The railing appears to
be loosened a bit and a board on the walkway is missing.

Luckily we lost only two trees and minor damage to other trees, which has been addressed. The
playground equipment looks good.

Pool Facility: Fortunately, we only had relatively minor damage to the trees, fencing around the
equipment rooms suffered damage and the tiles on the top portion of the fireplace at the Pool
building fell of and are scattered on the roof and ground nearby. There were tree limbs, etc. in
the pool itself, but no noticeable damage to the pool itself has been found.

MOVIE & CAMP OUT : APRIL 18TH
SPRING SPRUCE-UP: APRIL 19TH

Mark your calendar now for the first movie night, campout and spruce-up of 2008. The movie feature will be “THE BEE MOVIE” at the Scout Hut on Friday night starting @ 9:00 PM (after dark) along with those that want to camp out in Baronridge Park. Campers are invited to begin setting up their tents around 5 – 6:00 PM. The Spruce-Up will begin at about 8 AM Saturday morning and last until 12 Noon. Meet at the park for work assignments. Our focus will be the entryway along the east side of Forest Lake Drive including minor fence repair, trimming of branches and replacing some of the light sockets. Closet electricians would be helpful in this endeavor as well a few other projects if possible. We plan to stain the older playground structure in Baronridge Park along with general maintenance in the Park area, such as trimming low tree branches and shrubs. Depending on participants we’d also like to remove the vines on the brick walls and clean up the beds at the Willow Hill entrance and some clean up at the Pool. Please notify a board member if you have some special talents to help in these areas as well.

                                                  Clear Lake Forest Women's Club

Formerly the CLF Home and Garden Club, the name change has been made to better
describe the focus and purpose of this longtime group. As the only neighborhood organization (other than the Community Association) we will direct our efforts toward encouraging neighborhood interaction, helping CLF residents to get to know each other better, and being able to address issues and interests common to all of us.

The CLF Women's Club is an association of women of all ages who enjoy knowing their neighbors and whose efforts are aimed at improving our wonderful neighborhood. In addition to sponsoring social events for the community and providing the Christmas decorations at our entrances, this group assists the Community Association with other projects.

The Club meets monthly, the second Tuesday of the month, September through June, mostly in homes, and enjoys a time for social interaction before a program. Guests and new members are always welcome.

For more information about the Club, please call Karen Jones- President @ 281-326-4047 .

Front yard Flower pot thefts in Neighborhood reported

Several CLF residents have reported missing decorative flowers in pots placed in front yards. Potted geraniums and caladiums at homes on Forest Lake and Willow Hill are the most recently reported. Consider moving pots adjacent to the street to locations closer to the house and report thefts to Lakeview Police Dispatch at 281-326-5900 .

Dog Poop and Trash Cans
by Diane Humes, CLFCA

Many of you have noticed that the trash cans were removed from Baronridge Park and the basketball court near the pool. This happened at the Fall Spruce Up (October 2006), because the homeowner’s association has no reliable way of having trash removal and disposal from those areas. This seems to have caused few problems in the trash department – YEAH!. Most of you either take your trash home or never bring it to the park anyway. However, dogs are a potential problem; ninety percent of the trash in the cans was dog waste.

The CLFCA Board has purchased a “Doggie Dooley” for installation at Baronridge Park to compost dog waste. This will be located in the iris bed near the hose bib. Simply scoop the waste into the unit, add water to wet the contents, and close the lid. Please do not place anything else in the digester, especially plastic bags. The Doggie Dooley works as a miniature septic system that converts solids to liquid that can pass through the soil. This is an experiment which, hopefully, will be a convenient solution to dog waste at the park.

I recently attended the State of the Bay Symposium (Jan 2007) and heard a presentation about water quality of Houston bayous and bacterial levels. An interesting finding was that, using a technique called Bacterial Source Tracking, the three most important sources of bacteria in the bayous were, in order,: people, dog, chicken. In fact, 35% of E. coli and enterococci were found to come from dogs. This means dog waste left out on lawns.

All urban bayous in Houston, including Armand Bayou, our watershed, record levels of E. coli which exceed state standards. During a rain storm, contaminants from dog waste will be washed into storm sewers and/or directly into the lake i.e. Armand Bayou. Stormwater and runoff are NOT TREATED. This is a health and sanitary issue and we must all do our part. All dog waste should be disposed of in the trash or buried. Please pick up after your pet - at your home, your neighbor’s home, and at the park.

We are the most downstream neighborhood along the Armand Bayou watershed. We have no control over our upstream neighbors, but we can help keep our watershed clean. Give the Doggie Dooley a try or take the poop home. As they used to say, “You are either part of the solution, or part of the problem”. For more information, see:
http://www.gbep.state.tx.us, http://tpl.org (search Texas, then see Publications “Armand Bayou Watershed Plan”), and www.doggiedooley.com.

Harris County Flood-plain Maps redrawn

*As part of the Tropical Storm Allison Recovery Project, flood-plane maps for Harris County's 22 major watersheds have been redrawn. Detailed maps are available on the Tropical Storm Allison Recovery Project Web site. Residents can view maps for their area by typing in a street address and ZIP code. The site can be found at http://www.tsarp.org .

* from the Houston Chronicle, Houston & State section, dated September 18, 2004    {You can add elevation overlays to the map by selecting 10' or 2' Contours and then clicking on ADD DATA. The map will be redrawn with the selected elevation(s) spotted on the map )

Near Record Rainfall for June

The 12.5 inches recorded for June 2004 at the unofficial Baronridge Rain Gauge location, is second only to the 16.9 inches recorded for June 2001, when we experienced the downpour from Tropical Storm Allison. This compares to the National Weather Services numbers for Houston: June 2004( *18.32 in), and June 2001( *19.21 in.)
